Introduction

Nov. 3rd, 2009 | 06:41 pm
posted by: queen_oblivia in weightbot

Hi, everybody. I'm new here, so I figured I'd introduce myself. I'm bummed that I missed the start of the challenge that you're all doing but I'm hoping that a new one will start soon and I look forward to that.

What is your name?: Kelly
And, how old would you claim to be?: 31
How tall are you?: 5'7"

What was/is your starting weight?: 281
What do you currently weigh?: 268
This would mean you have lost how much to date?: 13 lbs, although the 281 was a nighttime weighing, which always gets a higher number than a morning weighing, so I kind of feel like I'm cheating a bit with that number.

Sometimes mini-goals work best. If you have one, what is it?: To get to a size 18 again.

What weight would you like to settle at?: I don't really know. I'm guessing about 130, although I'll have to see how I look as I get closer to that number. If I find that I'm happy at a higher weight, I'll stop there.

What exactly is your plan of action to reach your goal(s)?: I'm making most of my food from scratch and eating fewer processed foods. I'm also eating out on only the rarest of occasions. I've been walking a bit but I plan to step up the exercise and have bought the Biggest Loser Wii game.

Most of us have figured out what doesn't work, so we want to know what works for you: not eating after 9 or 10pm makes a big difference for me.

Do you have anything else to add?: I've successfully lost weight a few times but have always gained it back after about 2 years of maintaining and I really want to break that cycle. My husband, who is also overweight, has always made losing weight difficult for me because of his resistance to try to change his lifestyle. Since his gallbladder surgery 2 weeks ago, he's finally made a decision to mke some big changes and I'm feeling very positive about this time because we'll finally be a team and help to support each other. So far, he's lost 20 lbs and I've lost 13, so I'm very optimistic.

Who Controls You?

Oct. 29th, 2009 | 04:03 pm
posted by: sideris in weightbot

The below article is worth the read. That little voice can be completely over-powering sometimes, and it's true, in order to be successful at weight loss, one must put that little voice aside and go for it. When I'm in the exercise rhythm, the Just Do IT mantra goes through my head over and over again. Don't over-think, don't over-stress, just get on that fucking treadmill/elliptical/what-have-you and work that body.

From the Correct Weight Loss Blog

http://correct-weight-loss.net/2009/10/30/who-controls-you/

Who controls you? Is it you or is it that tiny voice in your head. You may be asking, “What tiny voice?”. It’s that same voice that stops you from waking up to exercise when the alarm rings at 6 am. It says, “You need the rest. You work very hard. Sleep for another 10 minutes.” I am sure we have all had battles with that voice. It can be extremely convincing and manipulative.

Yes, we have all heard that voice in our head. The funny thing about this voice is that the more you give in to it, the more powerful it becomes. After some time, it looks like you have an alter ego in you that seems to be making all the decisions for you. This is when some people don’t even know why they do some of the things they do.

The powerful voice in the head is also the reason why people procrastinate. “Don’t worry, you can do it later”, the voice tells you. This goes on and on and on.

You need to take the power away from that voice in your head. As was mentioned before, the only way that the voice can gain more influence in your life is when you continue to give it prominence.

Why Does the Voice Sabotage your Goals

The voice in your head has a duty to preserve your energy levels. Nature has wired us such that we conserve as much energy as possible. In pre-historic times, one was only required to spend energy on looking for food, preserving life of self and children as well as pro-creating.

Fast forward to the modern world and now you have an a person with a pre-historic operating system working in an ultra modern world. How on earth is the operating system going to comprehend the need to get on the treadmill and slog it out for one hour. It just does not make sense. That’s when the voice comes in to convince you to forget about the treadmill.

What Can You Do to Regain Power from the Voice

The first step is to set some worthwhile goals. This could be a goal to just wake up at 6 am for three times a week to do your exercise. This is a simple enough goal. Simple as it may be, you will have to fight tooth and nail to get out of the clutches of your bed when the alarm rings at 6am. It’s as though the bed has got a hold on you.

The voice will be trying it’s best to convince you to go back to sleep. You have to prevail over the voice. Stick to your goals and carry out what you have planned to do. The more you do this the lesser the influence of the voice. After a while the voice becomes softer and softer. It looses its grip over you.

Achieving your goals and getting done what you had planned to do also gives a tremendous boost of endorphins that provide that “feel good” sensation through out the day. It is the satisfaction that you have accomplished what you set-out to do.

Set a goal to win the battle against the voice. This battle won’t be easy but then again, all of our most difficult and biggest battles are fought in the silent chambers of our soul. Keep at it and you will prevail.

What is your name?: Sheila
And, how old would you claim to be?: 23
How tall are you?: 5'3"

What was/is your starting weight?: 190-somthing
What do you currently weigh?: 188
This would mean you have lost how much to date?: about 7 pounds give or take

Sometimes mini-goals work best. If you have one, what is it?: To fit into the clothes in my closet again! I hardly fit into any of them, which are mostly Juniors Large.

What weight would you like to settle at?: Don't know yet, I gotta see what I am okay with once I get there.

What exactly is your plan of action to reach your goal(s)?: I have cut out cholesterol from my diet, and am adding more whole grains and fruit. I already eat lots of veggies and nuts. I will also slowly introduce exercise back into my life. I tend to jump in too quickly and give up in a month or two so I have to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Most of us have figured out what doesn't work, so we want to know what works for you: Cutting out sugar. I am addicted to sweets. Thats about the only thing that works, is going off the sugar. But I have to learn to control how much I eat instead of cutting it out completely, because someone always has to do everything they can to make me eat sugar with them so they don't feel as guilty and once I give in, there you go, I gain twenty pounds cuz I go sugar crazy. I really am quite addicted.

Do you have anything else to add?: I was in the middle of losing a crapload of weight I gained from medications, and I was quite successful at it simply by cutting out sweets.  But, due to many reasons all balled together over the last three years (career change, getting a car, new friend who dragged me out to eat as much as possible, and moving in with a boyfriend who won't eat anything but fast food but of course is still incredibly healthy and lean) I gained about 30 pounds and have been unsuccessful in keeping it off. Someone is always there to sabotage me and I gain it back again! Then I gained even more when I figured what the hey, I'll eat it, I'm already fat. These are all problems I am barely learning to overcome, so I am finally getting somewhere, but it will be slow, I think.

Also, If anyone has any ideas to help me curb my sugar cravings, it would be helpful. It was suggested that I eat more fruit, but I hate most of it, so I'm going to try, but I need to have other ideas as well. I can't always have fruit stocked up in the house. The fruit can only sit around for so long before I refuse to eat it.

I'd appreciate any feedback from people who have dealt with similar issues and have learned to overcome them, I'd love to know what has worked for you.

Good luck to everyone already doing the challenge! I'll be joining you soon!
